Tie-breaking for GMR

In case candidates obtain the same GMR in WBJEE 2026, the authorities will use the following methods to resolve the tie. The authorities will apply the methods in the following sequence to break the tie. The tie-breaking rules for GMR are as follows:

• The candidate who secures less negative marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry taken together will be allotted a higher rank.

• The student who scores more positive marks in Mathematics and Physics taken together will be given preference.

• If still a tie persists, the candidate who has more positive marks in Mathematics and Chemistry taken together will have a higher rank.

• The student who gets less negative marks in Mathematics and Physics taken together will rank higher than the other.

• Even still a tie exists, the candidates with less negative marks in Mathematics and Chemistry taken together will be allotted a higher rank.

• Individuals with more positive marks in Mathematics for only the two marks questions will be preferred if a tie still exists.

• If the tie is not resolved even after the above steps then the student who has more positive marks in Physics for only the two marks questions will be given a higher rank.

• In case the tie exists, candidates with more positive marks in Chemistry for only the two marks questions will be preferred.

• Candidates with less negative marks in Mathematics for only the two marks questions will be awarded a higher rank for tie-breaking.

• The student with less negative marks in Physics for only the two marks questions will be given a higher rank as compared to the other.

• The candidate with less negative marks in Chemistry for only the two marks questions will be given a higher rank to resolve the tie.

PMR Ranks in WBJEE 2026

PMR stands for pharmacy merit rank. Candidates who appear for the WBJEE paper 2 are allotted the PMR ranks. The PMR ranks are based on the scores in the Physics and Chemistry paper. PMR will be considered for admission to all Pharmacy Courses except in Jadavpur University.

Tie-breaking for PMR

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board will apply the tie-breaking rules in the following order to resolve ties in PMR.

• Candidates with less negative marks in Physics & Chemistry, taken together will be allotted a higher rank.

• If a tie still exists, the student who has more positive marks in Chemistry will be given preference.

• In case the tie remains unresolved, the individual with less negative marks in Chemistry will be given preference.

• The candidates with more positive marks in Chemistry for only the two marks question will have a higher rank if the tie remains.

• Even after the above rules, if the tie still exists the student with less negative marks in Chemistry for only the two marks questions will be given higher preference.

• The authorities will allow a higher rank to the student with more positive marks in Physics for only the two marks questions in case the tie is not resolved.

• If a tie still exists, the one with fewer negative marks in Physics for only the two marks questions will be given a higher rank.

Final Tie-breaking rule for GMR and PMR

After the application of the Tie-breaking rules as applicable, if there are still ties, the same will be broken by the date of birth (DOB) of the candidates, with the older candidate having preference over the younger one. If the tie remains, then it will be decided by the application number in ascending order,i.e., the candidate who has applied earlier will be given preference.

Calculation of GMR

The GMR is calculated based on the candidate's scores in the WBJEE. Here’s how the authorities assign the GMR:

1. Subject Scores: The WBJEE exam consists of two main papers – Paper 1 (Mathematics) and Paper 2 (Physics and Chemistry combined). The scores from these papers are used to determine the overall performance.

2. Combined Score: The combined score is calculated by combining the marks obtained in both papers. The weightage typically follows a specific pattern, such as Mathematics carrying more weight compared to Physics and Chemistry.

3. Ranking: Based on the combined scores, candidates are ranked from highest to lowest. This ranking is then published as the GMR list.

Category Ranks

Category ranks are generated based on the category information given by the candidates during the online application. Separate reserved category merit positions are included for several category students, e.g., SC Rank, ST Rank, OBC-A Rank, OBC-B Rank, EWS Rank, PWD Rank, TFW Rank, etc., as applicable. Candidates must note that seat allocation will not be done as per the category ranks. The category ranks are only reflected in the rank card to provide information regarding the category-wise position of the respective candidate.

Hence, the candidate’s certificates/ documents/ proofs must be valid as of the verification date. If any candidate’s claim is found invalid during verification, his/her category rank will be cancelled, and the candidate will be considered in the general category.

GMR vs. Category Rank

It’s essential to distinguish between GMR and category ranks:

• GMR: This is an overall rank that includes all candidates irrespective of their category. It’s used for general seat allocation.

• Category Rank: This rank is specific to the candidate’s reserved category (like SC, ST, OBC, etc.). It is used for seats reserved under specific quotas.

For instance, a candidate might have a GMR of 5000 but an SC category rank of 200. While the GMR will be used for general seat allocation, the SC rank will be considered for seats reserved for SC candidates.
